Sal’s achievements in the food service industry and agribusiness are many. A lifelong farmer, he founded Sunnyside Vegetable Packing in 1975 and ran the Rosenhayn, New Jersey, fresh fruit and vegetable processing center until 1992.
During that time, he oversaw production of protein-based wet salads, frozen soups, and entrées – supplying c-stores, supermarkets, and quick-serve restaurants on the East Coast. From 1993-2008, Sal owned MissaBay – adding sandwiches and wraps to the menu of food service items he had established at Sunnyside. As Chief Operating Officer of the Swedesboro, New Jersey, organization, Sal was responsible for the supply operations of c-stores, big box stores, supermarkets, and QSRs from coast to coast.
He acquired Safeway Freezer Storage with his sons, Frank and Sam, in 2009. Active in the new enterprise, he remains passionate about farming, with 800+ acres of grain under cultivation each year.
Among his most significant contributions to the food-service industry, he pioneered and retailed a $100-million grab-and-go, protein-based, ready-to-eat salad line sold nationally. He developed a grab-and-go snack tray for the nation’s largest quick-serve restaurant chain – producing more than 750,000 units each week. He engineered and installed a $30-million-a-year fully automated commissary operation, producing 60,000 sandwiches and wraps every day. And finally he installed a semi-automated frozen soup and entrée line able to produce 600 pounds of product per minute.
Sal holds CDL and Boiler Licenses and is HAACP Certified.
A native of Millville, New Jersey, Sal makes his home (and farm) in the “great city of Rosenhayn," with his wife, Anna. They enjoy the company of their sons and grandchildren, Frankie, Ava, Samantha, and Salvatore Lucas. He ranks chief among his pastimes, riding his Harley, spending time with family and – of course – farming.
