Lou entered the food industry in 1963 as Transportation Manager at the Vineland, New Jersey, Green Giant Company facility, where he was employed until joining Pillsbury Company in 1974 as Transportation Manager. He remained there until 1989, earning Pillsbury’s U.S. Foods Distribution Award in 1986 for developing a computer program to simplify customer orders at all its frozen distribution centers.
In 1989, Lou received the U.S. Army Achievement Medal for Transportation Sergeant – commending the exceptional operation of his battalion’s transportation section, where he was responsible for training, scheduling, and vehicle maintenance for five battalion companies. In 1989, Lou joined Safeway Freezer Storage as Director of Distribution, leaving the Vineland public refrigerated storage organization in 1990 to become Transportation Manager for Pillsbury Company’s Wellston, Ohio, operation.
In 1996, he rejoined Safeway to manage its Transport Brokers division, helping to increase the company’s annual sales from $35,000 to $1.5 million. He continues there under the firm’s new ownership, as Transportation Manager of Safeway Logistics. Lou is responsible for order scheduling, tracking, and execution of national and international shipments; load planning, processing, and verification; carrier selection; claims management and all related managerial duties.
Having attended Ohio’s University of Rio Grande, Lou later received an Associate Degree in Marketing from Cumberland County College, Vineland, New Jersey, in 1997. He has been a truck driver, Transportation Platoon Sergeant, Battalion Supply Sergeant, Battalion Mess Sergeant, and Battalion Retention Sergeant for the U.S. Army.
The Vineland native lives with his wife, Dorothy. They have two daughters, Janeen and Christine.
